RELATED: Is James Charles Canceled?

As we’ve mentioned over the past few weeks, James has been facing allegations that he behaved inappropriately with minors. The first accuser released a series of tweets alleging that James was aware of his age and yet continued to message him. James addressed the first accuser’s claims with this tweet:

In the tweet, James claims that the accuser initially lied about his age. James says, I asked how old he was right away and he told me he was 18 so I started flirting back. He then says, Later in the day, he said a few things that made me question the validity of his original age answer and when I asked him to confirm his age one again, he admitted he was 16. James goes on to say that he cut off contact after learning the accuser’s age. James summed it up by saying he should ask for identification with every guy. The Internet’s collective response was, Yeah, duh. That and, why is someone of James’s status meeting randoms off the Internet anyways?

But the questions didn’t stop there. More accusers surfaced with similar stories. Some speculated that this was a pattern for James, citing Tati Westbrook’s accusation that James acted inappropriately with a waiter at her birthday party. Others pointed to Jeffree Star’s tweets alleging that James had a pattern of predatory behavior. James debunked Tati’s and Jeffree’s accusations in his video No More Lies. But with new allegations, some started to wonder, Were Tati and Jeffree right?

To make matters worse, James’s interview on Impaulsive resurfaced. In the interview, James says, I’m not really attracted to older guys, which sucks. Like I would date the absolute youngest, like 18, 19 that looks a little bit older. Or 24 that has a young personality. Some pointed to this as evidence of James’s suspect behavior. It definitely didn’t help.

The calls to cancel James grew louder, with some influencers publicly calling out the Youtube star. Some noted that prominent celebrities had unfollowed the beauty guru on social media. Then, Youtube abruptly pulled the plug on James’s involvement with season 2 of Instant Influencer. According to Variety, the Youtube didn’t explain why James wasn’t a part of season 2. But many believe that it was because of the recent allegations. Throughout this, James largely ignored calls for his cancellation. That was until today.

James released a 14-minute video addressing the allegations.

In the video, James claims he’s taking responsibility. These conversations should have never happened. Point blank, period. There’s no excuse for it. There’s no if, ands, or buts. And I take full responsibility for that. I trusted the information that was given to me that I could have, and should have, gotten myself...I didn’t do the research and that is what is so embarrassing. As an adult, it is my job and my responsibility to verify who I’m talking to. And there is no one to blame other than myself.

He points to desperation as his reasoning behind his behavior. The idea of actually being a relationship became so important to me that I was willing to trust too quickly, miss out on red flags, and most importantly, not take the precautionary measures that really anybody, but especially someone with a public platform, should be taking before talking to anybody. We’re not gonna lie. We kinda picked up on the desperation part. If you’ve watched James’s Twitter feed, then you know that he notoriously posts passive-aggressive tweets about his boy problems on Twitter. He also mentions them in interviews, including the Impaulsive podcast. In the interview, James went into great (like, too much) detail about his hookups with a DL TikToker. He also talked about a phase where he pursued straight guys and how he feels about dating younger, less-accomplished guys. We picked up some major pick-me vibes from that interview. So this admission by James is unsurprising.

James goes on to apologize to the victims, his fans, and friends. He also states that he’s taking time away from social media to work on himself. I’m going to be taking some time away to reflect and further education myself on all these topics. I think at this point it’s really important that I do so in order to prove to you guys that I will be a better person. Even though I won’t be posting, I do want people to know that I will still be here available, listening, and learning.

What do you think of James’s apology? Let us know in the comments.
